    Abstract:

Celaomiao Depression, Urad Rear Banner(Wulate Houqi), situated in the east margin of Bayingebi Basins, western Inner Mongolia, was formed in the Early Cretaceous and filled with siliciclastic rocks, covering 850 km2. There are some excellent outcrops showing unique geologic phenomena due to sparse vegetation and severe erosion. However, these important geological outcrops have not drawn the attention of geologists because they are in the remote area. We have introduced an outcrop of a volcanic conduit in a paper (L Hongbo et al, 2015&), and in this article, we will describe a natural outcrop of a typical lacustrine delta of Early Cretaceous in the west margin of Celaomiao Depression.Although different delta models have been introduced in many geological journals and magazines, few natural outcrop features from direct field investigation have been demonstrated in the literature yet. We are lucky to find one outcrop showing the intact longitudinal profile of a lacustrine delta, in the west margin of Celaomiao Depression. We are delighted to share this outcrop with other geologists because it is helpful to understand and reevaluate the different existing delta models. The three sedimentary units of the delta are clearly exposed on both sides of a dry gully in the NNE direction. The topset beds are composed of conglomerates and coarse sandstones with parallel bedding, and the foreset beds consist of similar sediments and form the typical concave upward beddings. The bottomset beds are mainly black shales and interbedded marlstones (Fig. 1). The attitude of foreset beds shows a SSW paleoflow, revealing the major part of the lake to the south and a provenance in the northern direction. The lacustrine delta belongs to a braid delta according to the architecture of the delta. This natural outcrop of lacustrine delta is not only a true scenario for geologists to research in three dimensions in the field, but also a very good site for the geological field training.
