    Abstract:

The application of mercurometric survey of soil gases in the study of active faults in overburden is a new method. The method may more accurately determine the position, attitude, extent, activity and mechanical properties of an active fault. The basic principle of mercurometric survey of soil sases in active faults is introduced. The effect and prospects of the method are illustrated by examples from the Yangtze Three Gorges,Jilin and Changchun.
