    Abstract:

A complete and systematic study has been made on the tithofacies--paleogeography of theupper member of the Neogene Guantao Formation in the Jiyang depression by using geologic, well logging, seismic and chemical data.First, from the lithologic characters, sedimentary tex—tures and structures, sand, body shapes, electrical properties and seismic reflection, the authorshave proved that the upper member of the Neogene Guantao Formation is represented by pied-mont profluvial and fluvial facies deposits。which are further divided into ten subfacies or microfa—cies.Second, the authors discuss in detail the distribution of these subfaeies and the relationshipsbetween sedimentary facies belts and oil and gas distribution. In addition, the paper also dealswith the direction of provenance, direction of channel water, ultimate catchment areas and paleo-climate during the deposition of the upper member of the Guantao Formation.
