Carbonate cements occur in the Neogene sandstone reservoir in northern part of Chepaizi area, Junggar Basin. The content of carbonate cements has a direct impact on the reservoir oil bearing. The study was based on core routine analysis data and using the method of image analysis for micro thin slices which can supplement the former’s limited data to quantitatively identify the carbonate cements. We found that the content of carbonate cements （Y）and the concentration of formation water Ca2+ （X）had a good positive correlation（Y=0.0512·X0.7155） in the Neogene sandstone in northern part of Chepaizi area. And the correlation coefficient reached up to 0.93. Using the concentration of formation water Ca2+ to quantitatively calculate the content of carbonate cements obtained some good results and solved the difficult problem of getting the data with no experimental analysis wells. Compared the oil testing data with carbonate cements data, we found that the wells with content of carbonate cements ≥ 20% have non oil producing, while the wells with content of carbonate cements <20% produce oil well. That shows the carbonate cements control the oil bearing of Neogene sandstone reservoir in northern part of Chepaizi area.
