Abstract:Worldwide comparison of lithospheric investigation achievements of COCORP、BIRPS、DEKORP、LITHOPROBE、ICDP、ECORS and SINOPROBE enables to expand the original Wilson cycle, which mainly describes generation, development and closing of ocean plates, to a complete and detailed cycle that describes generation, development and evolution of both ocean and continent plates. In this way, one can look for evolution path of worldwide plates at least since the Proterozoic Era. The expanded Wilson cycle suggested in this paper includes new processes such as ocean—continent transition and continental accretion and rifting, as well as the original Wilson cycle; and much more details are also provided. Based on the expanded Wilson cycle Ⅰ further explain the evolutional event sequence of Chinese continent with the mentioned tectonic processes that have been discussed by many Geologists since 1940s. From the expansion of the Paleo Asia Ocean in the Cambrian and rifting of the Gondwana continent to collision between the India sub continent to Eurasia in the Cenozoic, the evolutional event sequence of Chinese continent shows that the expanded Wilson cycle expresses the evolutional trajectory of the Chinese continental lithosphere.
