In this article，the origin and history of petroleum hydrogeology is briefly depicted. The methodological system of petroleum hydrogeology is given. Also th e roles of petroleum hydrogeology in all the steps of petroleum exploration and development are described. Finally，some important problems are discussed and th e perspectives of petroleum hydrogeclogy given.
