Abstract:Sedimentary organic facies has been extensively applied to gas and oil exploration in recent years. It is usually divided based on the organic geochemical method combined with the optical characteristics of organic matter. In fact, the character, types, composition, abundance and vit-rinite reflectance of source rock macerals can display hydrocarbon-generating conditions and sedimentary environment; therefore, sedimentary organic facies may be quickly determined based on organic petrology and organic geochemistry of macerals. The authors have studied Jurassic sedimentary organic facies in the Junggar and Turpan-Hami basins with the above method, and four sedimentary organic facies types have been distinguished; they are high moor organic faices, forest-swamp organic facies, running water organic facies and open water facies, of which running water organic facies is the best liquid hydrocarbon-generating organic facies for the production of oil from coal.
