Abstract:The Linglong gold mine is one of the oldest gold mines in China. Now it facesa crisis of reserves and is in urgent need of an evaluation of the prospect of itstwo ore districts and the ore potentiality of quartz veins that have not been pro-spected. Based on a study of the occurrence, physical properties, crystal habits, micromorphology, chemical composition, inclusions, thermoluminscence and infrared spectrum of vein quartz, the typomorphic characters for evaluating the ore poten-tiality of quartz veins have be summarized. By comparison of the physicochem-ical conditions of vein quartz in the two districts during its formation, it hasbeen found that ores of the Eastern Hill ore district show the features of theorebodies of its upper part while ores of the Western Hill ore district show thefeatures of the orebodies of its lower part. The Linglong fault elevated the lowerorebodies of the Western Hill ore district to the level of the upper orebodies ofthe Eastern Hill ore district after mineralization. It is concluded that the ore pro-spect at the deep levels of the Eastern Hill ore district is far more promisingthan that of the Western Hill ore district. This conclusion has been continuallyproved by explorational operation.
