    Abstract:

The deformation structure of liquefied pillar was first identified in the cores from the 8th section of the Yanchang Formation of the Upper Triassic in the Ordos Basin. Both the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the liquefied pillar were studied in this paper. Soft sediment deformation structures (SSDS) such as the liquefied SSDS, hydroplastic SSDS and some brittle SSDS have been found in many different locations of the cores from the 8th section of the Yanchang Formation. Sometimes they repeated vertically in the cores. Based on the analysis of the sedimentary environment and tectonic background, the authors propose that the triggering mechanism of the forming of these SSDS is the seismic shaking originated from the Qinling orogenic process since the late Triassic. According to the temporal and spatial distribution of these seismic SSDS, it can be concluded that the Ordos Basin had been controlled by the dynamic mechanism of the Qinling Mountains orogenic belt throughout the entire period of the 8th section of the Yanchang Formation, not only in the late period of the 8th section of the Yanchang Formation.
