    Abstract:

Natural geologic emission of methane plays an important role in the atmospheric methane budget and provides a possible explanation for radio-carbon-free methane in the atmosphere and global warming. This paper summarizes the researches of methane emissions in hydrocarbon-prone areas, including methane sources and migration mechanisms. This paper also introduces some measure methods and their characteristics. An estimation of geological methane fluxes in hydrocarbon-prone areas is also mentioned. These estimation have large uncertainty because of the comprehensiveness of the measurements. There is no doubt that CH4 flux measurements in hydrocarbon-prone areas will be carried out more and more widely. We should combine different methane monitoring means to achieve more accurate data. China is one of the big powers of oil gas production, the measurements of methane emissions in hydrocarbon-prone areas in China would be of help to global methane budget.
