    Abstract:

The Beihuaiyang tectonic zone is a narrow NWW—SEE trending tectonic belt located on the northern foot of the Dabie Mountains, the product of amalgamation between North China block and Yangtze block. Study of the sedimentary provenance and tectonic property reveals key information about the tectonic framework in this region and the dynamic evolution of Qinling—Dabie orogen. Based on comprehensive analysis of pre Mesozoic lithostratigraphical units in Beihuaiyang using structural geology, petrology, geochemistry and isotopic chronology, the following understanding has been acquired. The Beihuaiyang tectonic belt is a compound tectonic belt resulting from subduction and collision between Yangtze block and North China block. Its provenance derived from double source regions Yangtze block and North China block. The late Proterozoic lithostratigraphical units— Sujiahe Group(784±19Ma) and Luzhenguan Group(756±12Ma) represent the basement of the northern margin of Yangtze block, while flysch sequence and the middle to late Devonian Nanwan Formation represents the passive continent margin of Yangtze block. The latter is equivalent to the Liuling Group in south of the Shangdan suture zone. The Guishan Formation of the Xinyang Group is linked compositionally with the North China block. It serves as the fore arc wedge sedimentary bodies that distributes along the southern margin of North China block and is the eastward extending of Taohuapu fore arc wedge sedimentary bodies. The Foziling Group connects westward with the Xinyang Group. Whole rock analysis shows that sedimentary settings of the Foziling Group include both active continent margin and passive continent margin. Because of the superimposition of multiple structural activities (at least three times) since the Mesozoic, the lithogoical and stratigraphic unit of the Foziling Group has been reformed and thus tectonic unit can not be classified in detail. For the suture zone between two plates, authors propose that the Shangdan suture zone, after extending the Beihuaiyang tectonic zone, connects with the faulting zone of Guishan Meishan Lu’an Modun reservoir along the northern boundary of the Beihuaiyang.
