    Abstract:

Fractal features of grain-size distribution of core sediments, and the correlationship with the mean grain-size and sorting coefficient, located in the depocenter of Zhejiang-Fujian mud wedge on the inner shelf of the East China Sea (ECS), were discussed in this paper. The fractal scaleless band of cumulative percentage between 5% and 95% was adopted in the study. The core sediment had a self-similar (or fractal) grain-size distribution. The sediment grain-size and fractal dimension existed not only positive but also negative relationships. The boundary grain-size of this positive and negative correlation performed probably at about 7.0 Φ. When the mean grain-size was less than 7.0 Φ, the greater the mean grain-size corresponded to the smaller the fractal dimension. In the meanwhile, when the mean grain-size was larger than 7.0 Φ, the greater the former, the larger the fractal dimension. The sediment grain-size and fractal dimension existed not only positive but also negative relationships. The sorting coefficients were positively related to the fractal dimension, especially in the finer sediments (larger than 7.0 Φ). The decrease of sorting coefficient, which resulted in the grain-size relatively concentrated, illustrating the sediment formation background was relatively simple. The higher degree of the sediment self-organization, the lower the fractal dimension value. As an important boundary, the mean grain-size value of 7.0 Φ, in fact mainly corresponded to the boundary of the upper muddy section and the lower coarser sediment of Core EC2005. The muddy section of core depth 28.06~0 m with smaller mean grain-size, sorting coefficient and lower fractal values, illustrated the high degree of self-organization and their relatively stable sedimentary environment. The positive and negative correlations between the mean grain-size and the fractal dimension that is different with the previous studies to some extent. This research needs to be further developed.
