    Abstract:

    The discovery of Kala-2 gas field reveals a good exploration prospect of the Cretaceous formation in the Kuqa depression. Based on analyses of outcrops, well logs and high-resolution seismic reflection data, the sedimentary systems types and distribution characteristics of the Cretaceous in the east part of the Kuqa depression were studied systematically. The results showed the following facts. (1) Four types of sedimentary systems are developed in this area, that is, lacustrine system, fan delta system, braid delta system and delta system. (2) There are three evolutional stages of lithofacies and palaeogeography during the Cretaceous. In the early stage, a sedimentary environment of fan delta system predominated, in the middle stage large-scale shallow lacustrine was developed and the late stage is characterized by delta plains. (3) The lithofacies and palaeogeography of the Cretaceous show a clear south-north zonation. Sedimentary sources came from both south and north and coarse detritus is found on the north steep slope of the Kuqa depression. (4) The reservoirs in the eastern Kuqa depression are made up of three delta systems and coastal bar sand bodies, which are very thick and widely distributed.
