Invitation for Submission

To Mark the Centennial Anniversary of the Geological Society of China and

Acta Geologica Sinica (English Edition) in 2022

On behalf of the 40th Editorial Board of Acta Geologica Sinica (English Edition) (AGS for short), and the Editor-in-Chief of AGS, the editorial office of AGS would like to invite you to contribute your study to AGS to celebrate its 100th anniversary. We sincerely hope this invitation will receive your favorable consideration. AGS, as the oldest geological journal in China, has held a special position in the history of geology in China as well as at the heart of millions of Chinese geologists. Therefore, at its Centennial, we sincerely invite you to participate in this event.

GSC history

The Geological Society of China (GSC) was founded in Peking (Beijing) on February 3, 1922, in response to the urgent need for interchange of scientific idea and cooperation between different organizations. It is one of the earliest professional organizations in China. Dr. XIE Jiarong (C. Y. HSIEH), a 1920 Wisconsin University graduate, was the first president of GSC and there was 26 charter members. The GSC aims to disseminate basic geological data in China, report the accomplishments of Chinese geologists, bridge the platforms for geologists both home and abroad, and educate future generations of geologists across the country. During the past 100 years, the GSC has devoted itself to promoting understanding and knowledges of geology and related sciences in China, made immeasurable contribution to China’s industrialization, and has greatly promoted development of the Chinese society. The GSC joined the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in 1976. The 35th president of GSC, Dr. ZHANG Hongren, served as the president of IUGS from 2004 to 2008 and more than ten geologists held key positions in international academic organizations related to geology. Currently, the GSC has more than 60,000 members and 57 branches, which have become the cornerstone of China’ geological community. At its Centennial in 2022, the GSC will celebrate its achievements during the past 100 years, and also will commit the next 100 years to support the future development of China, to strengthen its cooperation with international geoscientific societies and organizations, and to educate the next generation of geologists. Therefore, GSC’s Centennial will be the start of next Long March for China’s geological causes.

Acta Geologica Sinica (English Edition)

Upon the founding of GSC, the Bulletin of the Geological Society of China was lunched as an official journal of the Society published quarterly in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin and others. In 1992, it was renamed Acta Geologica Sinica (English Edition) (AGS), and since 2004, it has become a bimonthly journal. As the first geological journal in China, AGS has witnessed the development of China’s geology, and documented significant discoveries such as the Peking man by Daveson BLACK in 1930, Bayan Obo REE ore deposit by T. H. TING (DING Daoheng) in 1933 and T. L. HO (HE Zuolin) in 1935, and establishment of the terrestrial oil generation theory by C. Y. HSIEH in 1940, among many other important breakthroughs. It has played a significant role in promoting the dissemination of knowledges, cultivation of geologists, and interchange of ideas. In addition, many well-known geologists, including ZHANG Hongzhao, WENG Wenhao, WANG Lie, DING Wengjiang, LI Siguang, A. W. GRABAU (USA), J. G. ANDESON (Sweden), and L. MINER (USA), were contributors to AGS. Therefore, it has long been regarded as a leading academic journal in China.

To celebrate GSC’s Centennial in 2022, the 40th Editorial Board of AGS has started a one-year-long program to publish three to five 100th Anniversary Special Papers in each issue in 2022. The program was initiated in last April at the fourth meeting of the Editorial Board. Manuscripts from world-known scientists, especially those who have made great contributions to China’s geology, are welcome. These special papers will highlight important achievements in geology during recent years, review the current state, unsolved problems, or specific issues of geological development, as well as present the latest research and discoveries. Therefore, we sincerely invite your contributions, and we hope that your contributions will be part of the historical milestone of the centennial publications of AGS.
