Abstract:The relativity of fault sealing and fault rocks was investigated based on the faulted rocks, and the relationship between fault sealing and vertical changes of fault rocks was established. According to types of fault rocks and buried depth of petroliferous basin, the shale smearing can be classified into ductile shale smearing of unsolidified sediments and grinding shale smearing of diagenetic rocks. Based on its vertical rheological characteristics, sealing performance of fault can be divided into upper open and sealing section with high permeability, middle broken open and sealing section, and lower sealing section with ductile deformation. The study discussed the quantitative characterization of shale smearing and listed computational methods for different kinds of shale smearing and the problems occurring. The study of shale smearing at the Ying 32 Fault in the Dongxin field shows that a few important oilbearing layers in the southern section of the fault are of poor sealing properties, resulting in that oil and gas traverses the fault, while all the oilbearing layers in the north are relatively closure. This result suggests differences of sealing properties and dynamic state even in the same fault.
